What happens when you abandon the expected tool and reach for something else entirely?

You get a technique no one else in the world is doing. You get Toothbrush Theory.

Los Angeles artist Jeffery Page developed this body of work through years of studio experimentation — discovering that a toothbrush, used with precision, intention, and a deep understanding of mark-making, produces a texture, a splatter pattern, and an energy that no traditional brush can replicate. The result is something that lives between controlled and wild. Between fine art and instinct. Between the gallery wall and the street.

This is that work.

The Technique

Toothbrush Theory is not an accident or a gimmick. It is a mastered practice.

Each painting in this collection is executed on Arches Watercolor Paper — the same archival-grade surface used by the world’s most collected watercolorists, from Turner to Cézanne to contemporary masters showing at Art Basel and Frieze. The mediums vary across the collection: watercolor and ink, liquid acrylic and ink, blood ink with gold leaf, pure ink on bristol. Every combination is deliberate. Every surface choice is made in service of what the image demands.

The toothbrush itself functions as both brush and spray tool — dragged, flicked, dabbed, and loaded with pigment in ways that create movement, atmosphere, and emotional weight that traditional fine art tools simply cannot manufacture. The technique produces paintings that feel simultaneously ancient and completely of the moment. Part Japanese sumi-e ink tradition. Part Los Angeles underground energy. Entirely Jeffery Page.
